VIRGIN AND MARTYR

Roman martyrology: In the concentration camp Kharsk in the region of Siberia in Russia, blessed Olympia Bida, virgin and martyr, member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, who during the anti-religious persecution endured all kinds testing for Christ.

Beatification date:  June 27, 2001 by Pope John Paul II in Ukraine.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Born on 1903 at Tsebliv, L'vivs'ka oblast', Ukraine. Greek Catholic.



Joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Worked in several towns as a catechist and novice director, and with the aged and sick. Taught and helped to raise several young women. Convent superior in Kheriv where the Communists worked against her. Arrested for her faith in 1951, and exiled to a forced labor camp in the Tomsk region of Siberia in Russia. In the camp she continued her duties as superior, and organized other exiled nuns into prayer and support groups. Martyr.

She died on January 28, 1952 in Kharsk, Tomskaya oblast', Russia.
