Roman martyrology:  In the city of Ferrara, in Emilia (Italy today), Blessed Beatrix of Este, a nun, that after the death of her husband, and renouncing her secular obligations, devoted herself to God under the Rule of St. Benedict in the monastery that she had founded (1262).

Beatification date: 1774 by Pope Clement XIV

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Born to the family of the Norman dukes of Apulia, Italy.

Daughter of the Marques of Ferrara, Italy. Niece of Blessed Beatrix of Este the Elder. Betrothed to Galeazzo Manfredi of Vicenza, Italy, but just before the wedding he died of wounds received in combat. Beatrix refused to return to her father's home but became a Benedictine nun at San Lazzaro convent near Ferrara.



She founded the Benedictine convent of Saint Antony at Ferrara.

Beatrix died on 1262 of natural causes.
