What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ ‘I won’t,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.  “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he didn’t go. “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you; the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you didn’t repent and believe him.” (Matthew 21:28-26:49 / XXVI Ordinary Sunday A).

Everyone knows that for a relationship, to last and grow and fructify, it has to be real, between two real people, who really want... Despite the differences, misunderstandings, problems... Which are also real, very real. If we were to choose between loving a perfect man or woman in every sense and for having, except in the fact that he is only an imaginary person, or loving a man or a woman with limitations, with mistakes, with problems... But of flesh and blood, and also with love and affection and dedication... I think everyone, without hesitation, choose the second option.

And anyway, we often fall into the same mistake: We don’t feel worthy to be loved. We believe that, for having failed, for our sins, we are no longer worth anything, that God cannot want us that way. This fatalist mentality is not leading anywhere. It becomes a trap of quicksand that keeps sucking more and more, until we suffocate.

“By That Love Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay. The song describes this fundamental reality of every good relationship. Who truly loves, doesn’t seek to find the unattainable... True love seeks something real, that can be touched and held in the hands.

And if this applies to any human relationship, why would it be different in our relationship with God? He also doesn’t want to love and be loved by a Superman or an Achilles or a Hercules. God became Man – not a superhero – to save men. He wants to have a relationship with a man of flesh and blood, like you and me. Clearly, we're not perfect, not even close! But He knows it... He made us... But he also made us in His likeness and gave us the ability to love.

The only thing God wants is for us to correspond his love with our love. And to love, in our case, with our limits, never means to fail: to love is to recognize us weak and needy, to love is to get up and keep fighting, regardless of size to the amount of falls, to love is to be that real person who enters into a relationship with all his being, the good and the bad, the triumphs and the defeats.

Be fully in this relationship. Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, waiting for me... waiting... let us also be those real people that he wants to love, with whom He wants to talk and enjoy life. Give Him a real time today, tomorrow and every day. So, we will experience the difference between knowing something about God and knowing God... Between the God of my imagination and the real God, who loves me... between being a man and being a saint.
