How is the arrival of the newyears celebrated in many places around the world? With fireworks. Fireworks toacknowledge publicly in a festive and concrete manner that the new year hasarrived. Well, why not start your 2013with Spiritual Fireworks!?!
I am talking about jumpstartingyour growth in the Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity (alsoreferred to as Love). Don’t you thinkthat would please God, our Father? And even if we are just past January 1st,so what! God is “Outside of Time,” isn’t He? Aren’t we told that many times? Soit surely is not too late to REALLY begin your 2013!
Recently I have written here aboutthese Theological Virtues. And my next article will focus upon the virtue ofHope. Just to take a moment to review, these three virtues are infused in usdirectly by God, they draw us closer to God, and increase with our cooperationwith God.
So what are some spiritual jumpercables or firework fuses to get us poppin’ in Faith, Hope and Charity? Oneinvolves copying from scripture 1 Corinthians 13 (especially 13:13) and readingit, meditating on it, and applying the LectioDivina approach to the scripture on a regular and frequent basis, such asonce a week or once a month.
Another is to pray daily to Godto increase your Faith, Hope and Love. You could add this to your daily morningoffering, or to another regular part of your daily prayer life.
A third approach to show God thatYOU MEAN BUSINESS is to recite the following prayer on some regular basis eachweek after receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. I recite it after Mass on everyFriday. The prayer goes as follows:
“My good and dear Jesus, Ikneel before you, asking you most earnestly to engrave upon my heart a deep andlively faith, hope and charity, withtrue repentance for my sins, and a firm resolve to make amends. As I reflectupon your five wounds, and dwell upon them with deep compassion and grief, Irecall, good Jesus, the words the prophet David spoke long ago concerningyourself: they have pierced my hands and feet, they have counted all my bones.”
The fourth powerful wayis to pray the Rosary daily. The first three Hail Mary beads (before the firstdecade) are usually prayed for “anincrease in Faith, Hope, and Charity” If you already pray the Rosary, tryto concentrate harder on what you are asking of God. If you are not praying theRosary daily, consider starting (for so many reasons) and again sincerely meanthis intention when you pray over those first 3 beads. Even when you can onlypray part of the Rosary, you will have prayed to God for an increase in theseoh-so-important virtues.
What is similar about theseapproaches? That you make them into habits, praying them regularly. What isnecessary for each of them? A sincereheart that is aware of and wants what you are asking God for.
Ready to start? Let’s light that 2013 Fuse together! In fact, let’s light all of those fireworks starting today!
