The Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty and the Committee on Pro-Life Activities have developed the prayer resources (below) for the month of October (Respect Life Month as well as the Month of the Holy Rosary). These resources have also been shared with all of the bishops.
“Prayers and Events Promoting Life and Liberty in October and Throughout the Year of Faith” contains a number of suggestions that you may find useful in planning events in your parishes during the upcoming months.
On October 14, a special “Mass and Pilgrimage for Life and Liberty” will be celebrated starting at noon Eastern at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Archbishop William Lori, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, will celebrate the Mass with a focus on our God-given, fundamental rights to life and religious liberty. You are encouraged to consider offering similar events on that date or at another time during the month of October. If your parish will be hosting a "Mass for Life and Liberty", please let us know.
Please also encourage wide dissemination of the “Rosary Novena for Life and Liberty” which has been planned for October 14 through October 22. The Novena encompasses the feast days of several saints who suffered persecution for their witness to the Catholic faith, such as the North American Martyrs, St. Ignatius of Antioch, and Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha (to be canonized October 21). Each day’s prayer begins with a brief reflection on the witness of the saint of the day, together with specific prayer intentions related to human life and liberty.
Also provided are a sample Holy Hour and homily notes for Saturday, October 20, including a brief catechesis on the three American blesseds who will be
canonized in Rome on Sunday, October 21: Kateri Tekakwitha, Mother
Marianne Cope, and Pedro Calungsod. Hopefully, Catholics will be
inspired by these new saints who restored hope and dignity to others and
who witnessed to their Catholic faith by suffering various forms of
persecution for their religious beliefs.
