The Imperfect Family

A parent in training shares some of his experiences.

We were walking along the River Walk in Naperville, Illinois. We must have looked like the perfect, American, suburban family: pretty wife, dad, cute little boy, adorable baby girl. We passed a woman who smiled and said, “Oh, the perfect family.”

Of course, looks can be deceiving; we are hardly perfect. We have problems, disagreements, illnesses, disappointments, debts and dust bunnies in the corners. But at least we got the basics right – we started with one man and one woman.

Lots of folks start out that way and somehow end up with one woman with kids, one man with kids, various combinations of kids from previous marriages and assorted permutations of humans that God never intended to have living together.

Some people find themselves as single parents as a result of desertion, death or a violent/abusive relationship that must be abandoned. They must make the best of an unfortunate situation – and many are heroic in doing so.

But as a society we ought to encourage real, genuine marriages between a man and a woman, with the prayer that God will bless them with children who can grow up in a loving home. We must encourage the ideal that God had in mind starting way back in the Garden of Eden. (Remember, one guy on his own didn’t work out.)

The popular media, various courts and even some Christian churches are in a virtual celebration of gay marriage. Corporations are falling all over themselves offering benefits to same-sex couples. Politicians are lining up to march in gay pride parades.

But that doesn’t make gay behavior right. This isn’t about civil rights, human rights or sexual rights. This is about God’s law. What happened to Sodom and Gomorrah wasn’t a joke.
