Do Not Get Used To It

“I know your works, your difficulties and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate the bad and that you tested those who call themselves apostles and found them liars. Nor do you lack constancy and have suffered for my name without discouraging you, but I have something against you, and you have lost your love from the beginning. ”

Revelations 2: 2-4

Before the arrival of the Messiah on earth, and for many centuries in which the events of the Old Testament took place, God's presence was sensitive, sometimes visible, and audible as well. The people of God knew His manifestations and saw his miracles continually through the prophets like Moses, Elijah, Elisha, Joshua, and so on.

The usual signs they witnessed, such as the opening of the Red Sea and the Jordan River, the plagues on Egypt, the water of the rock, the consuming fire, the flame of night and cloud by day, the manna, the quail of the sky and thousands of supernatural facts were part of the reality of the Hebrew people.

It didn't take long for the people to get used to this reality, so they stopped valuing the greatness of their God and, on many occasions, they complained, they got angry against Him, they rebelled, they turned away from his presence, they abandoned him and even betrayed him to go after false gods who were uselessly worshiped by other peoples.

As social people, we tend to get used to the relationships we have, especially to the closest ones. A concrete example is the person whose loving, attentive, committed, faithful, responsible spouse ceases to be valued. We get used to the love of our partners, to their presence, to their fidelity, and sometimes we begin to complain, to move away, to abandon them, or even to betray them, because we stop valuing the blessing it is to have them in our lives.

It also happens to us as believers: we get used to the love of God, to his mercy, we get used to knowing that He favors us, blesses us, provides us, keeps his promises and is always with us (although we cannot see him). In our path of faith, sometimes we move away from their presence, other things distract us, we give more place to our personal interests than to their will, or we go after other desires, in idolatry. We complain, we lament, and we get bitter or even abandon it.

The presence of God is as real today as when it was visible. His Spirit manifests itself in various ways in our lives, but we often take it for granted. We stop scrutinizing his Word because we believe we already know it, and we stop talking to Him because we know he already knows everything.

Let us not get used to simply the love that surrounds us. Let us correspond and value every show of love we see, every person we love, every moment with those who love us. There is nothing greater in heaven or earth: the love of God and that of our fellow men.
